On this day in 1890, reporter Nellie Bly finished a trip around the world in 72 days, beating the 80-day record of Jules Verne’s fictional character, Phileas Fogg. As you may have realized, Nelly Bly was the inspiration for Miss Fix in the current Masterpiece Theater version of Verne’s classic, airing on PBS.
