On this day in 1905, a physics journal published the Einstein paper which introduced E=mc2. Because of the several papers Einstein published that year, 1905 is sometimes referred to as his Annus Mirabilis. Recently, the most precise test to date of Einstein’s weak equivalence principle has proven him right again.

White Collar Crime is Never Victimless

White collar crime can make victims of sophisticated investors, independent agencies, or the federal government. The founder and CEO of EV truck maker Nikola is on trial for allegedly misleading investors. In North Carolina, a trucking company was recently found guilty of defrauding the USPS. Indictments have been issued in the alleged theft of $250 million from a pandemic food program whose stated purpose was feeding hungry children in Minnesota.

If you are a victim of white collar crime, Asterion’s forensic accountants can follow the money to quantify the losses sustained. A recent speech by Deputy AG Lisa Monaco suggests that in the event your company discovers criminal activity has occurred, voluntary disclosure might be worth considering.

UPDATE: From 2019 onward, many of us were puzzled by the story of Your Hometown Deli, a publicly-traded stand-alone shop in Paulsboro, NJ with a market cap at $100 million. We’re not surprised that three men, two from North Carolina and one from Hong Kong, have been charged with multiple crimes, including securities fraud, involving the deli and its holding company.
